The course will involve:

  • Learning how to cover and finish a leather headband. How to cut, block and finish a matching birdcage veil and veiling trim

Level – This course is aimed at those with some level of blocking and sewing experience

You will need:

  • 1 piece of fine lightweight lamb nappa leather or suede
  • Fabric glue (SOBO is a good choice available on Amazon)
  • Cocktail stick to apply glue
  • Double sided sticky tape (at least an inch wide) (essential)
  • Press and seal film or a think plastic bag which the masking tape peels off from easily when over the block
  • Masking tape any width (essential)
  • Spray Water bottle
  • Please also ensure you have a fabric glue which requires you to leave it to become tacky before use, this should be a white glue rather than a UHU type glue ie Sobo glue
  • Pins with heads
  • Pegs (ideally soft close) but any will do
  • OPTIONAL – If you have a dome headblock (usual crown block) please have this out too as I will be showing you a technique with this as well, also blocking pins
  • 1 x 40mm wide jersey covered padded headband


  • Paper template
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needles
  • Thread to match your veiling/leather
  • Dressmaker’s pins
  • Polystyrene dummy head please make sure the circumference of the head (around the head band) is at least 21.5 inches
  • Ballpoint pen or similar
  • Matching Petersham 15mm ribbon for finishing.
  • A metre length of 12in wide coordinating veil
  • Hairspray

You will leave with:

  • A covered leather headband. A completed blocked birdcage veil and matching veiling trim
